104 : Grand Theft Auto 2 You're a small time crook looking for a break to get you into the big
time
Grand Theft Auto 2 Description :
The computer game is set in a vast, slightly
futuristic city, where the Police force have become a paramilitary force
and the city is controlled by a number of vicious organized crime gangs.
The entire city 'lives'. Hundreds of thousands of people live in the
city. You will see them on the street, going about their business - shopping,
working, taking a stroll in the park. The streets also swarm with hundreds
of different vehicles - cars, trucks, buses, cabs, articulated lorries
of all descriptions, all driving through the city. The emergency services
work. There are railroads stations, docks and subways - all of which work
realistically.
The player is free do absolutely ANYTHING they want, when they want.
You can steal every single car in the computer game . You can go ANYWHERE in the
computer game . You can machine gun people in the street, have your car rigged with
explosives or respray it to avoid the attention of the Police. Trains can
be hijacked and taken for a ride through the city, hidden missions give
you nasty weapons and encourage you to kill or maim as many people as possible
in a given time. Stolen cars can be sold for cash, religious groups persecuted
and trains hijacked.
The city will react too. Try to jack someone's car in a rough neighbourhood
and you could get yourself shot in the face for your trouble. Take a nice
car through a run down area and the chances are that your hot rod is going
to get stolen at the first set of lights you come to. The occasional psychopath
may wander through the city, discharging automatic weapons at pedestrians
and forcing the police into a state of war. Muggers may leap from dark
alleys and steal your cash, your weapons, your clothes. Luckily you're
a tough guy yourself and will probably have come across a number of highly
dangerous weapons ? a couple of pistols (very John Woo), pet Pc Games rol bombs,
tazers, s hotguns. Y ou can even rig your car with enough explosives to
demolish a fair sized sky-scraper (I'm not even going to mention the combine
harvester and the shopping mall- yet).
And all of this, ALL of this happens without even touching on the structure
of the computer game . You can play this computer game without 'playing' the computer game i.e. you
can jump in for five minutes, steal things, scream around the city, blow
things up, avoid the police, lead the SWAT teams through a ten block fire
fight and just generally run amok if that's what you're in the mood for.
But the computer game itself has an enormous amount of depth. There are several
major gangs within the city. The Yakuza, the Russian Mafia, A Redneck Patriot
gang etc. Each gang controls a different area and is responsible for a
different aspect of crime within the city. The Russians steal expensive
American cars and weaponry to ship back Home (they also control a huge
underground organ and body-part smuggling operation). The Yakuza are vain
- they want the latest and best in weapons, cars, and clothes- This makes
them a prime target for the Russians, who will waste a Yakuza, steal his
weapons and car and then put him on ice so his various bits will be fresh
for the black market back in the old country. The Rednecks brew moonshine,
hate anyone who's not like them and blow things up occasionally. The Yakuza
leave them alone because they think they are too dumb to be a threat. Behind
all this gang warfare there is the shadowy and mysterious Zaibatsu. A gigantic
corporation, so large and powerful that it has become mostly political
and runs the city behind the scenes (remember 'OCP' in 'Robocop'?). They
have their own agenda and only by working though the computer game will the player
be able to figure out what it is.

In order to work for one of the gangs, the player will have to earn
some 'respect'. This means doing things that the gang like or will appreciate.
For instance, delivering a couple of very nice cars to t he railroad terminal
controlled by the Russians will earn you a couple of respect points. If
you killed a few Yakuza to get the cars - you'll get even more. Once you
have respect from a gang they'll start to give you missions and jobs to
do. Of course, the downside of this is that the Yakuza will be VERY angry
at you. And this will affect how you move through the city, since if the
Yakuza want you dead - driving through one of their neighborhoods is pretty
much suicide. The more respect you get, the tougher the jobs get - but
the more cash you get in return. Of course, you can always even things
up. Rig a car with explosives and take it to the Russians, blowing them
all sky high and the Yakuza might - MIGHT just cut you some slack. They
may even start giving you a few delivery boy jobs.
It gets better too. Take a well known redneck vehicle (a pickup truck
say?), rig it with a bomb and blow it up in the parking lot beneath a Yakuza
building and Yikes! You've started a gang war. Of course, no matter who you're working for or which gangs want your
head, if you break the law, the Police will hunt you down. Ordinary patrolmen
first (and they're bad enough) then SWAT teams. The FBI will become involved
if you remain at large and the body count increases by a huge amount and
then, to top it all off, the military will be called in. At this point
'collateral damage' means approximately Bugger All. If they have to blow
up half the city to nail you, they will.
It's just you. In a giant 'living' city, trying to create as much strife
and conflict as possible so, when the time comes to pick up the pieces
there's only one person with enough wealth, power and sociopathic tendencies
to become the real power in the city. You.
Like it's predecessors Grand Theft Auto and GTA : London 1969, GTA 2
has a remarkable soundtrack which elevates it above every other computer
computer game in the market. Not content to res t on the laurels and awards won
by the original computer game soundtrack, Rockstar and DMA are creating something
even more extraordinary. Moving Shadow - a highly respected UK dance music
label have contributed to the computer game . Not content with licensing tracks or
supplying back catalogue material, Flytronix - one of the hippest dance
acts in the world at the moment, have actually visited DMA Design and worked
with DMA's in-house musicians to create and remix totally new tracks especially
for the computer game . This is world first and proves once again that Rockstar are
committed to raising the standard of the music found in Pc Games until it
equals or surpasses that found in movie soundtracks.
